What Long/Short Term Accommodation Options Do I Have if I Want to Stay Close to an Injured Family Member?

Family support is always important when someone is injured, especially for children and young people. If the patient lives in a rural or remote area, they may need to travel some distance away from home to obtain proper treatment. If your injured relative requires treatment at a hospital or medical facility that is a long way from home, you will likely need accommodation so that you can be close by.

Getting medical attention

Whether its accommodation for a family member’s first few days in a hospital or frequent trips to the city for long-term treatment, there are a number of short and long-term accommodation options available, depending on which hospital or medical facility your injured family member is staying in.

Where can I get assistance with accommodation and travel expenses?

Government schemes

This scheme is available to assist people living in rural and remote areas who have to travel more than 50km for specialist medical services which are not locally available. The scheme doesn’t provide accommodation but can help with travel costs.

To be eligible for the scheme you must be a Queensland resident who is eligible for Medicare and obtaining specialist medical treatment that is recommended as medically necessary for your condition and which is not available within 50km of your nearest public hospital.

You can lodge a PTSS application form with your local hospital. As a carer of someone who is recovering from an injury, you should also be aware of your rights.

Inclusive Kids Community Fund

Grants of up to $4000 are available to individuals between the ages of 0-18 years living in the Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast regions who are unable to access other funding or assistance.

How can I reduce costs when staying away from home?

Calculating how to reduce costs

You may not be able to reduce the costs of obtaining temporary accommodation away from home, but there may be things you can do to reduce your expenses at home while you are away.

For example:

  • Are there utilities or services connected to your homes such as internet or cable television that can be suspended or put on hold while you are away?
  • If you have a gym, public transport pass or other membership, can you suspend it for the period you are away?
  • If there is no one staying in your home while you are away, could you consider renting it out or putting it on Airbnb for a period of time?
